Marvel has reportedly sealed a deal to have Anthony and Joe Russo direct the two-part Avengers: Infinity War. Part I is slated for a May 4th, 2018 release, with Part II coming a year later on May 3rd, 2019.
The move makes the Russo brothers Marvel’s top directors; the pair previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are currently working on its sequel, Captain America: Civil War, set to lens next month. They’re expected to shoot the Infinity War films in one long production beginning sometime next year.
While a writer hasn’t been announced, there is talk that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who penned the three Captain America films and also worked on Thor: The Dark World and TV’s Agent Carter, were being courted. Their history of success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially alongside the Russos, gives the rumor solid credence.
There’s no word yet on how this deal will affect the three-year first-look the Russos recently signed with Sony Picture. Rumors have popped up that one of those films would be a Channing Tatum-starring Ghostbusters movie, but considering how long and involved one Avengers film can be — let alone two — it seems unlikely that could come to fruition soon.
Update 4/7: Marvel officially confirmed the news this morning.
